I found this cool moth on the side of my bank building in Richmond, VA. Fascinating. It looked like a tiny military drone.
Great observation! The sphinx moths do have a fighter jet silhouette 🙂
This is the pandora sphinx moth. These are really cool looking moths! Great coloration!!
The caterpillar is one of the hornworms meaning it has a tail. The early stages have the tail, but in this species during the last molt of the larva stage it loses the tail which leaves a button-like spot on the rear. They can be greenish or a reddish brown color. The caterpillar has 5 large white spots along each side, making it very colorful and striking.
Larvae feed on leaves of peppervine (Ampelopsis spp.), grape (Vitis spp.), and Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia).
This moth is found in eastern North America. There is one generation in the north and two in the southern states.
